An animal (mouse) bioassay was used to evaluate the potency of a wide variety of airborne sensory irritants. Concentration-response relationships were obtained for each chemical and the potencies of these sensory irritants were compared. An attempt was made to predict from the data obtained in the animal bioassay what the response would be in humans. A good correlation was found between threshold limit values for these chemicals and the level that, on the basis of the potency of each chemical, would be predicted to be acceptable in humans.
