A review is given of the environmental impact of the entire process of fossil-energy production, from exploration to consumption, to survey the efforts made through public policy to achieve a satisfactory quality of life. The validity of the U.S. present growth ethic in total energy requirements will ultimately be questioned, but a steadily increasing energy supply of a few percent per year may be assumed an essential goal.
