The hierarchic structure and fluorescence behavior of cyanine dyes in mum-sized polystyrene droplets or domes on mica substrate were investigated. The samples were prepared by moving a glass roller connected to a digital motor after casting a dilute polystyrene/dyes solution in the space between substrate and glass roller. A de-wetting process leads to the formation of cyanine dye J-aggregates in small polymer domes arrayed in two dimensions with a diameter of 1 similar to 100 gm and a height of 20 nm to several mum. Fluorescence micrographs show that dye aggregates formed in the surroundings of the domes at a certain dye concentration. This means that the dye aggregate structure from the molecular level to the micro fevel is formed by self-organization. The fluorescence spectra of J-aggregate showed a red-shift with increasing concentration. By comparison of different domes, a size effect of the fluorescence spectra was observed.
