This study aims to investigate how networks, both within and outside of an organization, affect performance and to gain insight into performance management within organizations. An online survey was conducted with two project management teams from different companies to calculate network metrics through social and multilayer network analysis. We adopt psychological safety as a measure of performance. The results indicate that higher performance can be achieved through an asymmetry of ties: in which cohesive ties are more effective for relatively close relations, such as teams and intra-organization networks, and bridging ties are more effective for external networks.
