MATERIALS AND METHODS Blocks of the head, body and tail of the pancreas were obtained from 200 almost consecutive necropsies on adults; after fixation in 4 per cent. neutral formaldehyde the tissues were impregnated with paraffin wax and sections stained as follows: Harris's haematoxylin, celestin blue and eosin, the picro-Mallory and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) techniques. In selected cases reticulin was impregnated by the method of Gordon and Sweets (Culling, 1963). Frozen sections were stained with oil red 0.Grading of fatty change. The amount of fat in the tissues was graded arbitrarily from 0 to 4: grades 1 and 2 represent less or more than 8 fatty lacunes in the parenchyma of the head, body or tail; grade 3 indicates areas of partial fatty replacement of exocrine lobules (fig. l), and grade 4 represents areas of total replacement (fig. 2).
