The relationship between degradation of basement membranes, metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration and proliferation has not been previously investigated in any intervention study. We used adenoviral overexpression of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) in cultured human saphenous veins.
