Recent political developments in Slovakia produced a form of domestic politics compatible with participation in the EU and confirmed that ‘Europeanization' — here taken to mean a process of transformation of the domestic structures of a state by European frameworks, norms and rule — in the case of Slovakia, has been synonymous with the intensification of the democratization process from beyond the state's boundaries. The article examines firstly, the structure of political competition in the period between 1998 to the present day and secondly, the inter-relationship between identity-related issues and European integration. The main thrust of the argument is that consecutive post-1998 governments have been better at managing European integration than at eliminating the legacy of nationalism and ‘postcommunist authoritarianism'. It is also argued that ‘Europeanization' is particularly problematic to states such as Slovakia where it follows hard on the heels of a relatively strong nationalistic mobilisation of ethno-territorial character connected to the establishment of independent statehood. However, the evidence suggests that despite the structural instability of the Slovak party system and some outstanding problems with national and minority issues, ‘Europeanization' has been a positive and contributory factor in the slow transformation of Slovakia from a failing democracy towards a European multinational one.
