The potential role of the gut microbiome in promoting health has become increasingly evident, but these bacteria may also play a key role in the development of disease. Since the advent of next-generation sequencing techniques, non-targeted metabolomics and associated complex bioinformatics, the microbiome has been associated with obesity, metabolic and cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, brain function and many other gut and systemic diseases. 1–5 This has resulted in an explosion of research investigating the gut microbiome and its impact on the human metabolome under different conditions and disease burdens. Similarly, polyphenol-rich foods have been tested for their effects on cardiovascular risk factors, including inflammation, and for their impact on cognitive function and decline. There are many different polyphenols in the human diet, but only few are well absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The rest reach the colon directly
