METHODSSubjects sat in an air-cooled plethysmograph with an airtight seal at the neck separating the body and head charnbers (2). V 1 o umes were measured with a spirometer attached to the body chamber. The gas to be breathed was passed into the back of the head chamber, against a baffle,-and left the chamber through a l-5-inch hole directly in front of the subject’s mouth. The flow rate was sufficient to preyen t rebreathing of expired air. A sampling tube was taped to the face and positioned with its open tip just within the opening of one nostril. End-tidal Pcoz was sampled from this site and measured with a rapidly responding infrared analyzer. In most subjects there was sufficient nasal flow during speech so that acceptable plateaus of carbon dioxide could be obtained at several points during each period.CO2 and volume signals were recorded oscillographically at a paper speed of either 1 mm/set or 0.5 mm/set. Ventilation was recorded as the sum of all inspiratory excursions during 1-min intervals. Corresponding alveolar ventilation was estimated based on an assumed dead space volume in milliliters equal to the body weight in pounds (7). In one set of measurements, subjects breathed air. In the second set, they breathed air with CO2 added. The mixtures of 3-3.5% of CO2 resulted in approximately a doubling of spontaneous ventilation.
