Few works concerning microbial communities have been conducted at the surface of Sphagnum peatlands. However, microorganisms probably play a key role in the recycling of nutrients, especially through the microbial loop. In addition, changes in the structure and function of these communities could be good indicators of human disturbances. The aim of this article is to present a synthesis of the abundance and biomass of the different microbial communities (Bacteria, fungi, cyanobacteria, microalgae, protozoa and rotifers) living at the surface of Sphagnum peatlands. Furthermore, the use of microbial communitiesfor the study of the impact of human disturbance has been considered.
