For many readers of this journal there is the added interest of his explicit aim of 'welding traditional historical attitudes and techniques to the psychoanalytic scheme of human nature and human development, each informing and criticizing its partner'. So far, most psychohistorians have not succeeded in combining these approaches but Freudian ideas have evidently stimulated Gay's historical imagination and so contributed to an outstandingly original work. The next four volumes, scheduled to cover the theses of aggression and conflict, will be eagerly awaited.
