Na'channels on rat and rabbit skeletal muscle fibers have two inactivation processes with different kinetics and voltage dependen~ e.'-~ Fast inactivation is sufficiently rapid to terminate the action potential.'Slow inactivation is too slow to affect action potential termination. Slow inactivation, however, operates at more negative potentials than fast inactivation, so that the distribution of channels between closed and slow inactivated states may regulate the number of excitable Na'channels. 3In rat fast twitch muscle fibers, I,, is about 5-10-fold higher immediately adjacent to the end-plate than at regions away from the end-plate.'I,, declines rapidly with distance away from the end-plate, reaching the background level at 100-200 pm from the end-plate.
