The chemical and biologic properties of the nitrogen mustards were studied extensively between World Wars I and II, prompted by the experience with the war gas sulfur mustard.' The pronounced cytotoxic action of the nitrogen mustards on lymphoid tissue led to the development of a number of agents, categorized as alkylating drugs, that are particularly useful for chemotherapy of lymphoproliferative disorders.^ Mechlorethamine hydrochloride (HN2; methyl-bis {2-chloroethyl) amine HCl), the prototype of the nitrogen mustards, was introduced into clinical medicine about 40 years ago'' and was shown shortly thereafter to be effective for the palliative systemic therapy of advanced mycosis fungoides (MF).''-^ The short-term benefit of topically applied HN2 solutions on the cutaneous manifestations of MF was first demonstrated by Sipos** in Hungary in 1956 and by Madison and Haserick" in the United States 3 years later. Subsequent work by Van Scott et al.**-'" and others""''' demonstrated that dilute HN2 solutions may be administered safely to the entire skin surface for prolonged intervals of time to provide sustained complete remissions, and possibie cures, for most patients with relatively early (pretumorous) intracutaneous MF. Moreover, other topically applied alkylating drugs, most notably carmustine (BCNU), have been demonstrated to be efficacious for MF.'-'-"' In addition, topical HN2 chemotherapy has been utilized for other conditions, particularly psoriasis'^"--' and histiocytosis
