Christian Kuttner opened a discussion of the paper by Maria Helena Godinho: How do you quantify the order, I suppose you use NMR? Also, you mentioned the use of an order parameter to describe the degree of order in layered structures–but this parameter is de ned for 3D ordered systems. Could you please comment on whether it would be useful to use the 2D order parameter instead to quantify order in such systems?Maria Helena Godinho responded: Thank you for mentioning this point. An orientational order parameter, S, of the cellulose semi-rigid macromolecules (rods), at a given point of the liquid crystalline solution, can usually be quanti ed if a macroscopic property of the LC system is measured (different techniques, which include NMR spectroscopy, can be used).
