The incidence of metastatic cancer to the heart shows a gradual rise in more recent series. Of 694 autopsies performed on patients with cancer at the New York Hospital from 1947-1953, 127 or 18.3% demonstrated metastatic cancer to the heart, primarily from bronchogenic carcinoma, carcinoma of the breast, lymphoma and leukemia. Microscopic metastases were present in 34 of 74 cases of leukemia (46%). Symptomatology, if present, depends on the location of the metastatic tumor in the pericardium, myocardium, or heart chambers themselves.
