Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) were administered daily orally and subcutaneously to groups of pregnant and non-pregnant female mice. None of the compounds studied were as toxic to TCDD and teratological effects were confined to this compound, 87% of abnormal foetuses/litter resulting from the lowest subcutaneous dose employed (25 mu g/kg day). It is suggested that TCDD injected subcutaneously is more readily available biologically than when administered orally. It is concluded that compared with TCDD the other dibenzo-p-dioxins studied are relatively non-toxic and, at the doses employed, not teratogenic.
