The tear film is a relatively complex structure of lipids, proteins, and mucins riding on the hydrophobic surface of the epithelium. It is a dynamic structure and not very stable even in normals. The ever-changing interaction between these three basic elements requires reconstitution every few seconds to maintain the health of the epithelium. To understand the tear film as a dynamic process, we need first to consider individually a number of elements that are its constituents.
