The aggregation of an uncharged surface active agent in aqueous solution is described in terms of a multiple equilibrium model. The analysis of light scattering data using this model enables the concentration of monomeric species to be obtained as a function of the total solute concentration. Consequently, average aggregation numbers and diffusion coefficients may be calculated from light scattering and free boundary experiments, respectively. A simple interpretation of these parameters in terms of the micellar hydration and shape may only be carried out in the case of a single micellar species. There is evidence to indicate that micelles formed byn-alkyl hexaoxyethylene glycol monoethers (CNE6) are monodisperse at 278.2 K. The configuration of the monomer in the micelles, and the micellar hydration are discussed for theCNE6compounds.
