September 1994 sponse. Within the confines of the SCID mouse model, CD4" cells do not provide protection comparable to that of CD8" CTL. We therefore support the use of CD8" T cell clones for the control of virus-infected cells in vivo. In the clinical trans-plant setting, CD8" T cell clones may be prescreened and selected for strong activity toward virus-infected, but not uninfected, targets of donor and recipient origin. Clones may then provide virus-specific protection in the absence of graftversus-host disease in the immunosuppressed individual.Acknowledgments. The authors thank VE Turner for HLA typing data and CM Rooney, MK Brenner, ME Eichelberger, and J. Gilbert for useful discussions and critical reading of the manuscript.
