Abstract karen and matthew were a young couple with growing careers, a strong, stable marriage, and hopes for starting a family. Yet when months, and then years, rolled by in their marriage without a pregnancy, they began to wonder if possibly there were underlying causes, such as stress or other physical complications, that were keeping them from having a baby. Karen decided to seek advice from her health care practitioner. It was then that they learned that they-like many couples-could have factors contributing to infertility in their lives. Abstract Experts consider infertility as one year of appropriately timed, unprotected intercourse without conception, or the inability to maintain a pregnancy through birth. Infertility affects 10 to 15 percent of all couples of reproductive age and approximately one-third of all women (32 percent) will experience at least one episode of infertility during their reproductive years (Seibel, 1997). Abstract As the demand for infertility services rises (Stephen & Chandra, 1998), clinicians in all areas of women's health will be asked about the causes, diagnoses, and treatment options. Nurses will need to understand the difficult and often complex psychosocial issues faced by couples struggling with infertility.
