The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the exact relationship between activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and subjective quality of life (QOL) in patients with schizophrenia, using 52-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Thirty-eight (22 female, 16 male) patients with schizophrenia who were clinically stable enough to undergo the assessment and satisfied the age criteria, and were within 18–60 years (mean age, 32.8±10.95), participated in the study. There are some other methodological limitations to consider when interpreting the results of this study. Firstly, multi-channel NIRS has limited spatial resolution in comparison with fMRI and PET. In summary, this is the first NIRS study to specifically investigate the cortical neural mechanisms underlying subjective QOL in schizophrenia patients. Oxy-Hb changes in the prefrontal and left superior temporal cortices were significantly associated with subjective QOL. This suggests that neural activity in these areas is associated with subjective QOL, and that hemodynamic responses assessed by noninvasive NIRS techniques might be a useful biological marker.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
