John Everett Millais’ The Blind Girl (1856)’[jpre I] may be taken as a paradigm: a paradigm which illustrates the importance which specularity has come to possess in our readings of the mid-Victorian period, and which simultaneously demonstrates some of the problems associated with specularity. In particular, it dramatises the co-presence of inner and outer vision, and raises questions about the representation of each.The emphasis on the Victorian emphasis on specularity has recently gone hand in hand with a belief that if we can understand the laws and associations that governed systems of representation during this period, we can, to all intents and purposes,‘read’the Victorians. For
