A year-round current flows northwards along the steep continental slope of the NE Atlantic. Transport estimates average 1.5 × 106 m3s−1 west of the UK, but increase greatly in the Faeroe-Shetland Channel. There is evidence of larger transports in winter. Density and associated longshore pressure gradients are thought to force the flow.
