The registry records clinical descriptors of patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, since its function is directed primarily at describing the safety and value of the technique in specific subgroups of patients. No control patients-eligible candidates for angioplasty who do not receive the procedure–are included. The Duke Database for Cardio-vascular Disease" has concentrated efforts on patients with a specific disease: coronary artery disease. Procedures these patients undergo are recorded, as are observations in control patients who subsequently are shown not to have disease but who were referred for specific tests or therapies. Functionally, the data base is used both in research and in the management of patients at Duke.
