Assessment of vegetable cowpea production among smallholder farmers in Ohaukwu L.G.A. of Ebonyi State, Nigeria was carried out using 120 randomly sampled respondents. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results indicated that vegetable cowpea production was mainly in the hands of aged female farmers who cultivated an average farmland of 0.93 ha and produced an average of 0.56 ton ha -1 in the 2009 cropping seasons. Income generation from vegetable cowpea production was low with a mean of N3, 736. The mixed cropping system and local varieties were dominant in vegetable cowpea production in the area. R 2 -value was 50.3% and statistically significant; and the elasticity values of the significant variables showed that the farmers were operating at the stage II of the production function. The results of the factor analysis showed that lack of improved vegetable cowpea seeds (0.702), inadequate extension services (0.686), poor market price (0.681), poor seed germination (0.657), inadequate and delayed rainfall (0.639), pests and diseases attack on the field (0.624) and low demand (0.567) were major constraints to vegetable cowpea production in the area. It is recommended that greater awareness should be made on the nutritional potential of vegetable cowpea especially through health institution, and provision of improved vegetable cowpea production technologies to the farmers through strengthened extension services.
