From as early as the middle Republic, ethnic diversity was a hallmark of the ideology of the Roman aristocracy. Just as Roman ethnic identity drew on a Trojan affiliation, associating Rome with Greece, so too separate families emphasized various local ethnic connections. As the empire expanded, so too the flexibility of this discourse allowed elites to refashion the boundaries of their ethnic identities.
