In this paper we introduce the notion of stable vector bundles of degree one on an algebraic surface. We prove an existence theorem for such bundles and determine the birational types of their moduli spaces on K 3 surfaces or rational surfaces. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 14D20, 14F05.
