Vocal vibrato is generally considered to result from modulation in frequency, ampli tude and timbre (spectrum). Acoustic char acteristics of vocal vibrato phonation have been the subject of extensive investigations [Deutsch. 1982; Large, 1980; Seashore and Tiffin, 1932; Wyke, 1974; Vcnnard, 1967], The importance of amplitude or intensity (I0) modulation and its phase relationships with fundamental frequency (Fq) modula tion have not been clarified. For example, Luchsinger and Arnold [1965, p. 93] de scribed phase relationships between F () and lu modulations but failed to explain possible causes of the relationships observed; Through simultaneous recording of the pitch and intensity modulations with vibrato, it could be shown that these two parameters of vocal vibrato may be correlated in the same vibrato phase or may proceed antagonistically. This means that the rise in pitch in each vibrato phase may coincide with intensity in crease. or pitch may rise while intensity falls and vice versa.
