The avoidance reflex of Periplaneta americana to light was used to generate an action spectrum for this behaviour. The proportion of animals that avoided a light increased with the intensity of the light, sometimes decreasing at the highest intensities on reflective surfaces. The action spectrum was generated by measuring the proportion of avoidance as a function of the wavelength of the stimulus. The results indicate that at low intensities the insects avoided long wavelength light (> 430 nm) with the highest sensitivity. At high intensities, short wavelength stimuli (< 430 nm) were most effective in evoking the reflex. Sensitivity to a rotating polarizing filter was observed.
