Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is an oxidant pollutant of particular importance because of its presence in both outdoor and indoor atmospheres (1, 2). Indoor NO2 levels have been observed to exceed outdoor levels in homes with unvented sources of combustion, reaching peaks in excess of 2.0 ppm (3). The fact that brief exposure to a high level of NO2 can result in an acute inflammatory response and pulmonary edema due to increased epithelial permeability (4) has led to concern regarding the effects of lower level exposures. Chronic exposures of animals to levels near the ambient range have resulted in epithelial injury, proliferation of type II cells, and alterations in alveolar macrophages (5, 6), lending justification for this concern.
