I found this a very stimulating paper. I share Mailer and Thornhill’s conviction that the inheritance of FA is an ideal topic for a meta-analysis. I find it quite surprising that the additive genetic variance of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) can be as high as Mailer and Thornhill (hereafter M&T) have found. This has led me to question whether FA dominates the phenotypic variance in symmetry, as virtually everyone who has written on this topic assumes. In addition, I find the explanations put forward by M&T for the patterns of genetic variance unconvincing. Fluctuating asymmetry is usually modelled by assuming that each member of a pair is drawn independently from identical normal distributions (i.e., Palmer and Strobeck, 1986), with variance a2/2. In this case, the expected difference between the paired structures is normally distributed with mean 0 and variance g2. A very important feature of this model is that the variance of FA values is so large that the FA value of any particular individual will be a poor predictor of the mean FA value of the population. The expected value of FA over the population is
