Three Dense Hydrous Magnesium Silicates (DHMS), clinohumite-OH, chondrodite-OH, phase A, and synthetic and natural samples of the (F,OH)-solid solution series of topaz were investigated by TEM lattice fringe technique and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). EEL spectra were acquired within the energy-range 500-750 eV including an OH-related peak at about 528 eV, the O-K edge at about 532 eV, and the F-K edge at about 685 eV. The OH/O-intensity ratios determined by EELS are independent of the exposure time under the experimental conditions. The OH/O-intensity ratios measured depend on the thickness of the specimen. Corrected for this thickness dependence, the OH/O-intensity ratios measured by EELS for the three DHMS-phases can be correlated with their OH-contents. Additionally, it has been shown that EELS can be used as a semiquantitative method to determine the X OH -content in topaz by measuring thickness-corrected OH/O-intensity ratios.
