NIQUE PROBLEMS IN DIAGNOSING PRIMARY U liver carcinoma are evident from the fact that 10 cases in which this was a primary diagnosis have been presented since 1959 in a popular series of published clinical pathological conferences.1-10 At the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich., in a less extensive series of conferences, 7 cases of liver carcinoma have been presented since 1952. Clinically, this disease presents no unique features. Physical and laboratory examinations provide little help in establishing the diagnosis even when the disease is advanced. Pathologically, the diagnosis can usually be made with assurance although precise classification is sometimes difficult. This report presents the clinical and pathological features of 60 cases of primary liver carcinoma. The pathological findings as observed in both operative and autopsy specimens are emphasized.
