Abstract The processes of zygospore germination and meiosis in Closterium ehrenbergii Meneghini are reported, utilizing several clones of the same mating group. The first sign of zygospore germination is the greening of the zygospore. Thereafter the germination vesicle is released through the ruptured zygospore wall into the surrounding medium; this occurs in the dark as well as in the light period. The two plastids, visible on one side of the vesicle just released, first move apart and then come closer to each other again, probably accompanied by cytoplasmic movement. As the vesicular volume reduces, a cytoplasmic cleavage progresses to produce a pair of gones, each containing one plastid. Meiosis begins in the greening zygospore and is completed in the germination vesicle. At the end of meiosis two non-sister nuclei abort. One surviving nucleus and one aborting one are incorporated in each gone with one plastid. Closterium ehrenbergii has a great number of rod-like chromosomes and at least two long acro...
