The storm impacted beach/dune erosion at the hyper-tidal coastal environment, Sefton coast, UK was investigated. A new storm event classification (Hs + TA = 2.4 m) was established based on the variation of wave height (Hs) and water level (TA) using probabilistic methods. Numerical simulations were carried out using the dune erosion model XBeach. Sensitivity analysis using different water levels, wave heights and storm durations indicated that water level dominates the beach/dune erosion compared to wave height on this coast. A comparison of storm impacts between the new classification and the official storm definition (Hs = 2.5 m) was carried out simulating an observed high severity storm event. The storm event defined by Hs and TA produced higher dune erosion compared with the official definition. Work is currently in progress to further validate the storm classification using Hs and TA.
