The knowledge of the rheological properties of ceramic slips is important for both preparation and control'purposes in the slip casting process. Slip casting is widely employed in the whiteware industries because it allows complex shapes to be obtained. A ceramic slip can be considered a suspension of coarse particles in a fine-particle suspension (clay/kaolin suspension) and its rheological behaviour is closely related to that of clay/kaolin suspensions. The shear-dependent behaviour of clay/kaolin aqueous suspensions and its dependence on a variety of factors (deflocculant concentration, solids concentration, temperature and duration ofthe dispersion process) have been examined in previous papers."? At high solids concentration and low deflocculant concentration, clay/kaolin suspensions exhibit a thixotropic behaviour which is easy to recognize experimentally.
