Sandstone is one of the most widely used stone materials, being both common in many geological sequences, and easy to use for construction purposes. In construction, an advantage that sandstone has over many other stones is the ease by which it can be split, using basic hand tools, along existing sedimentary planes. Sandstone might also be regarded as the stone that is most understood by the layperson, basically sand cemented together to form stone. For the geologist this could not be further from the truth. Sandstone varies in the nature of the constituent grains that may have differences in size, composition, shape, roughness and degree of dissolution, whilst the grains themselves may be laid down in variable bands, the quality and type of cement may be changeable, and matrix materials of differing quantity and form may be present. All these factors naturally affect how a given sandstone performs as a dimension stone.
