Genetic data on the inheritance of red, yellow, orange, and lemon ray flower color, tubular ray flowers, anthocyanin-pigmented disc flowers, and ligulate disc flowers were obtained from parental, F1, and segregating populations of sunflowers. Red flower color was apparently controlled by 2 genes with complementary epistatic action in one cross with a yellow-flowered line. Monogenic inheritance was suggested for red flower color in crosses with orange and lemon lines. Crosses among yellow, orange and lemon lines indicated that yellow was dominant to orange, lemon showed recessive epistasis to yellow and orange, and that 2 genes adequately explained the result. In crosses of yellow .times. lemon the interaction of these 2 genes produced F2 segregation ratios of 9 yellow:3 orange:4 lemon. Segregation in F2 for 1 gene was observed in the yellow .times. orange and orange .times. lemon crosses. Tubular ray flowers and anthocyanin-pigmented disc flowers were controlled by a single recessive and single dominant gene, respectively. Ligulate disc flowers were dominant over normal flowered types and the F2 segregation ratio suggested that a minimum of 2 genes was involved.
