In this article we demonstrate the immunocytochemical localization of nitric oxide synthase in mitochondria isolated from heart, skeletal muscle, and kidney, using a monoclonal antibody directed against the endothelial form of nitric oxide synthase. The possibility that mitochondrially located nitric oxide synthase is a ubiquitous regulator of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in mammalian cells is discussed. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
