Each of the major divisions within Science-the Research Editorial Department, the News Editorial Department, the Art Department, and the Production Department-is con-tinually looking for ways to improve the journal and keep abreast of new technological, cultural, andconceptual developments. The effort to enhance ourvalue toour readers goes on continually and is reflected in minor changes that may appear fromweek toweek and pass largelyunnoticed by anybut our mostdiscerning readers. Every once in a while the changing needs oropportunities requiredramatic changes in our journal. Forexample, an examination ofnewproductiontechnologyand reader needs indicated to us thatScience could be produced more efficiently and organized and presented more effectively. Asa result, our Art and Production departments carefullyevaluated how such a plan could be implemented, preserv-ing those features that appeared to be favorable, andincorporating new ideas that would increase ourreadability. The new format features a considerably changed table ofcontents but permitsreaders tospotauthornames moreeasilyandhighlightsnewsarticlesor Perspectives that add information to thepapersin the same issue. Other parts of themagazine were changed invarious waystopresentscientific work and news articles attractively and efficiently and to eliminate wasted spacebetween articles.In addition to the physical presentationofScience, there are conceptual advances also. We have alwaysbeen an international journal, publishing manyforeign authors and covering news events abroad, but ouremphasis has been more focused onthe science and news of the United States. We are simultaneously expanding our subscription list in Europe and the Far East andprovidingmorepagesforEuropeanand Far Eastern authors as well asfor science news from these areas. To some extent, a journal has the characteristics of a human organism. Humans are
