Disuse osteoporosis clearly demonstrates the effect of mechanical factors on bone structure. Sudden withdrawal of mechanical loading, ie, of weight bearing and physical exertion against gravity, initiates a rapid bone loss (Whedon, 1960; Whedon et al, 1948) that will abate, however, even during continued immobilization (Minaire et al, 1974; Uhthoff and Jaworski, 1978; Whedon, 1960). This phenomenon suggests an adjustment of bone mass to reduced mechanical demands.
