A technique devised for rapidly quenching reactions occuring in a rapid compression machine during the ignition delay period is described and the results of preliminary studies made with it are presented. The quenching device was designed and adapted to the machine to extent its utility and provide a means of studying the chemical reactions preceding autoignition. Withe this device preflame reactions can be arrested at any predetermined point during compression or ignition delay. Suitable techniques may then be employed to analyse the partial oxidation products. As initial investigation with the device was conducted on the stoichiometric benzen-air syste. These studies confirmed the previously known fact that only a negligible amount of benzene or oxygen is consumed during tge early stages of the ignition delay. Based on this finding and ignition delay time measurements, a global activation energy of ca. 11 kcal/gmole was calculated for the benzen-air reaction which may apply to the initiating steps of the reaction mechanism. The device described shows promise of being a powerful tool for following the chemical course of preflame reactions which occur at high pressure a powerful tool for following the chemical course of preflame reactions which occure at high pressure and temperature.
