Five aspects of intra-group behavior among wild jungle babblers were analyzed in relation to the age, sex and breeding status of the participants. The amount of participation in allopreening, sentinel behavior and movement initiation were closely correlated with age and breeding status, resulting in a rough concordance between rankings based on these 3 activities. There was some difference between the sexes in the degree of participation in allopreening and sentinel behavior and this may be explained by differences in their strategies for breeding. Changes in play and roosting behavior with age are related to the establishment of dominance relations among birds of the year and possible connections between other aspects of behavior and social status are also discussed.
