The sexual behaviour of wild and inbred strains of House mice has been analysed extensively in the confines of the laboratory (reviews by Bronson, 1979; Mackintosh, 1981; Dewsbury, 1982). In contrast, little is known about any aspect of the behaviour of free-living mice as they have rarely been observed directly, and their sexual behaviour has never been described. During a recent study of mice living in poultry houses (Hurst, 1984), a long sequence of mating behaviour was recorded on video tape. Analysis of this unique recording has revealed important information about the mating behaviour of free-living mice and the sequence is described in detail in this paper.
