The responses of single afferent fibers of the vagus nerve to changes in lung vol. were recorded in cats under Dial anesthesia. The fibers could be divided into 2 distinct groups according to the rate at which their end-organs adapted to lung inflation. The slowly adapting receptors had on the avg. a lower inflation threshold than the rapidly adapting receptors. Some of both these kinds responded to forced deflation of the lungs, but no receptors were found which responded only to deflation. The conduction velocity, measured in 20 fibers and corrected to body temp., was between 8 and 44 meters/sec. The differences in adaptation and threshold of the 2 afferent fiber groups, when compared with the 2 reflexes evoked by inflation of the lungs, suggest that impulses from slowly adapting endings inhibit inspiration, while those from the rapid adaptors excite inspiration. This evaluation of function adequately accounts for the respiratory responses to both inflation and deflation of the lungs. Only the slowly adapting fibers are in action in eupnea. A change in their threshold contributes to the increased rate of respiration in hyperpnea. The principle function of the rapidly adapting fibers appears to be a reinforcement of the depth of certain deep inspirations which have been initiated through other mechanisms.
