Methods Quantitative tests of sensitivity to antibiotics were performed on bacterial and fungal isolates from the Mayo Clinic, the wards and emergency rooms of the 3 hospitals served by the diagnostic microbiology laboratory of the Mayo Clinic, and the Section of Experimental and Anatomic Pathology that serves these institutions. The agar-dilution technique utilizing the inoculation-replicating apparatus of Steers et al.[7] allowed multiple screening of sensitivities with an inoculum size of 105-106 viable units.
