The appearance of pineal monoamines in the developing rat was studied by fluorescence microscopy. The pineal gland of the newborn rat had no demonstrable 5-HT [5-hydroxytryptamine] until 1 week after birth; adult levels were reached at 3 weeks of age. Pineal 5-HT appeared simultaneously in parenchymal cells and sympathetic nerves. During the 1st week after birth only noradrenaline [nor-epinephrine] was found in the intrapineal nerves. High activity of tryptophan hydroxylase was registered at birth, whereas DOPA decarboxylase and monoamine oxidase attained a corresponding degree of activity much later. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: From auth. sum
