HIS paper reviews and extends the theory of irreversible thermodynamics. The irreversible behavior of a system driven by externally applied forces has been studied extensively, but attention has been focused primarily on the first-order term in the driven response. Here we also consider the higher-order terms in the driven response and the random fiuctuations, or noise, occurring during an irreversible process. In addition to the well-known relations between the linear response and the equilibrium Quctuations, several new relations are proved involving the nonlinear response, the driven noise, and the equilibrium Quc-tuations.
