There is an error in our paper, Amenable operators on Hilbert spaces, that forces us to withdraw our main claims (Theorem 1.3): (i) that every amenable Hilbert space operator is similar to a normal operator, and (ii) that every weakly amenable operator with finite spectrum is similar to a normal operator. These assertions remain, at this level of generality, unresolved conjectures at this point in time. Consequently, the results in Sections 4 and 5 (with the exception of Theorem 5.18 and Proof #1 of Theorem 5.15) are also withdrawn.
