Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide. Stroke survivors live with a variety of cognitive and physical problems. The more common are physical such as weakness and paralysis of one or more limbs, spasticity, problems of balance, speech and changes in sensation. Research indicates that frequent physiotherapy can be extremely beneficial with some improvement in function can be achieved. However, several factors limit the amount of time invested in supervised physiotherapy sessions, including: economic factors, travel arrangements to and from hospitals, and fluctuation in motivation. This paper presents a study investigating a virtual physiotherapy mobile device (the Rehab Coach) for the use of stroke survivors as a home-based rehabilitation system. The study aims at understanding the opinion of patients and medical professionals about the device as well as their views regarding the current UK National Health System (NHS). The results will be used to improve the current prototype.
